Bluetech engine series#

Originally built for the 2006 model year, the E320 was the first engine in the BlueTEC series. The second technology, dubbed DeNOX, combines an oxidizing catalytic converter, particulate filter and peripheral systems to further reduce the amount of nitrogen oxide and soot emitted by Mercedes-Benz diesel vehicles. The first technology, known as AdBlue, utilizes urea injection to chemically convert nitrogen oxide into harmless water vapor and nitrogen. Both technologies are intended to dramatically reduce the amount of nitrogen oxide released into the atmosphere. The BlueTEC moniker refers to the inclusion of two unique emissions-reducing technologies. As part of these regulations, advanced emissions control systems were required on all diesel vehicles manufactured during or after the 2007 model year to facilitate efficient combustion of the newly standardized Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel.

With the exception of Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz is currently the only automaker manufacturing diesel passenger vehicles intended for sale in the United States. In terms of the American consumer automobile market, Mercedes-Benz is perhaps the most well-known manufacturer of diesel vehicles.
